While the task of getting the ball rolling at the NBA’s annual extravaganza technically falls to the All-Star Celebrity Game, the Rising Stars is the first competitive event—a term used very loosely with the All-Star Weekend.

As is often the case with this sort of event, those seeking playoffs-like intensity and an ultra-competitive environment may be better off looking elsewhere on Friday.

At the same time, there are plenty of reasons to expect that the Rising Stars game, now in its 26th iteration, will provide plenty of talking points and entertainment.

The 20 players selected by the NBA assistant coaches represent the best rookies and sophomores the NBA has to offer. The prospect of seeing Doncic, Williamson, Young and Ja Morant on the court at the same time hardly needs selling.

Doncic, who featured in the game as a rookie last year, is the most high-profile player on the World Team. The Slovenian has accumulated 12 triple-doubles this season and is averaging 28.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game.

He is joined on the roster by New York Knicks guard RJ Barrett, the third overall pick of the 2019 draft.

Barrett is one of a record four Canadians taking part along with New Orleans Pelicans guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke.

Like Doncic, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young—the third-most prolific scorer in the NBA so far this season with an average of 29.7 points per game—will return to the Rising Stars game after appearing in the event as a rookie last season.

Again like Doncic, Young has been voted to start the All-Star Game on Sunday, marking the first time since Grant Hill and Jason Kidd did so in 1996 that multiple second-year NBA players will start an All-Star Game.

Young will play alongside Williamson, who takes part in his first All-Star Weekend event despite only making his NBA debut a month ago.

The number one overall pick of the 2019 draft is averaging 22.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in the ten games he’s played since recovering from a knee injury that had kept him out until January 23.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of Friday.
