The topic came up during the last episode of RETRO Replay’s The Last of Us playthrough uploaded to YouTube February 25, where hosts Nolan North and Troy Baker interviewed Ashley Johnson, the voice of Ellie, and The Last of Us’ Creative Director Neil Druckmann. Around the 44-minute mark, Druckmann talks about how The Last of Us was such a success that they did not know how to top it, and thus moved on to other projects because Sony was open to it.

He relates that to the challenge of following up the original Uncharted, and goes on to say they have not yet worked on a follow-up to 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, but that “maybe one day we will.” North, who voices the series’ protagonist Nathan Drake, says “we’ll talk about it” before rightfully assuming the Internet would take what they said and run with it.

The entire interview is a pretty blatant advertisement for the upcoming The Last of Us 2, which would have released last week if not for its own delay, but there is a lot of fun behind-the-scenes commentary and footage throughout the video for eager fans to latch onto. However, the briefly mentioned possibility of a new Uncharted game seems to overshadow the topic at hand.

Tom Holland, who will play a younger version of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted movie alongside Mark Wahlberg’s Victor “Sully” Sullivan, has talked about how Uncharted 4 will be a major influence on the film despite it being a prequel. That leaves plenty of room for the Naughty Dog team to write another sequel to Nathan Drake’s story should they desire it.

For now all the developers’ attention is focused on getting The Last of Us 2 out the door, which by all accounts should be a harrowing experience given its “M” rating from the ESRB. After that, who knows what the future holds for the ever-popular treasure hunter once his movie (hopefully) makes it safely to the silver screen.

Uncharted is scheduled to release in theaters on March 5, 2021.
