Some big chains are offering top-notch deals for those looking for a tasty cool treat at low prices.

You can get creative at Nestlé Toll House Café by Chip where you can choose two freshly baked cookies and then choose an Edy’s Ice Cream flavor to place in between, all at a cost of only $2.

At CREAM, you can buy a mini ice-cream sandwich for one penny between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at selected locations, while stocks last.

Insomnia Cookies is offering a buy one, get one free Cookiewich deal at participating locations through to 3 a.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2019, according to Chew Boom.

Meanwhile for those in Massachusetts, free ice cream sandwiches will be given out during a “Unicorn Fantasy Party,” at Boston Common, courtesy of Hood Ice Cream and Wally the Green Monster, 7 News Boston reported.

There will also be free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream sandwiches at Sony Square in New York City from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST, while stocks last. To mark the day, the ice cream giant will also offer users of its website a recipe on how to make the treat.

The treat has a long history, dating back 120 years, according to the Boston Globe. It was mentioned in a recipe book as far back as 1894 and it soared in popularity in the 1920s.

The book Sugar and Snow: A History of Ice Cream by Jeri Quinzio credits an unknown vendor in New York City as being the first to sell ice cream sandwiches, which went for a penny each.

In their traditional form, vanilla ice cream is tucked between two thin layers that resemble chocolate cake but they have developed down the years.

These now include chipwiches—or ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies, an invention from 1978 by Richard LaMotta, cousin of boxer Jake LaMotta, the subject of Raging Bull, according to The New York Times.

The variations also depend on the country. In Australia, the most popular sandwiches are called “Giant Sandwiches,” while “Maxibons” are half-dipped in chocolate.

The treat is also popular in Singapore, where more exotic flavors, such as red bean, yam, and honeydew are common, according to punchbowl.com.
